We started the day by going to Griffith Park, which is one of the largest urban parks in North America, covering over 4000 acres. We parked at the entrance and walked up Mount Hollywood for about 40 minutes, until we reached the observatory at the top. The observatory has been featured in several movies, most notably 'Rebel Without a Cause, in 1955. There is a fantastic view from the top of Los Angeles and a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean.
Our next destination was Olvera Street in downtown LA. It is the oldest street in Los Angeles and is home to the oldest building. It is now a colorful Mexican marketplace and cultural center. I have now been there three times and it never ceases to charm and delight me.
From Olvera Street we made our way to Grand Central Market which has been part of LA since 1917. It is old and a little grungy but charming and exotic. It has fresh produce, dry goods and several cultural food eateries. In the two years since I first went there, there seems to be a movement afoot to make it more upscale. I hope the old and new can cohabitate.
It had been our plan to go to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to listen to a Christmas concert that the City of LA puts on yearly free of charge. We arrived only to find the theatre full and the line ouside extremely long. We were able to listen to part of the concert outside but decided not to join the line-up.
We did have an excellent view of City Hall from that vantage point.
Tonight we are going to see the movie 47 Ronin with one of Dawn's friends.
May you all have visions of sugar plums and to all a good night.
😊🎅🎄
We have also had blue skies but sloppy slushy underfoot with temps hovering around 0 - plus 4. The stools remind me of the cafes of our youth, probably still have them in some place like Derwent. Enjoy your Holidays. CHEERS PAT
ReplyDeleteLooks like another great holiday for you. We have a diner in Dawson that has those stools. It is an old fashioned 50's diner complete with a jukebox. An experience for sure. Enjoy your travels around LA.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good day. I can't see that observatory without thinking of the knife fight in RWAC. LOve the picture of you on Olivera Street.
ReplyDeleteIt is snowing in Summerland.
